Obituary of CAROL BALLEW

Ruth Carol Tompkins Ballew A private memorial service celebrating the life of Ruth Carol Tompkins Ballew, 91, of Newberry, SC, will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Clemson University Golf Team Scholarship Fund, PO Box 1529 Clemson, SC 29633 Attn: Bert Henderson. Mrs. Ballew passed away on Friday, December 3, 2010. A daughter of the late Pope S. and Martha Lou Tompkins, she was born September 18, 1919 in Newberry, SC, and was the last of six siblings. Mrs. Ballew attended Newberry City Schools and was a graduate of Newberry College with a Business Degree. She started work at Newberry Lumber Company in 1947 as a bookkeeper and later became Manager of the Retail Store. Through contacts, she helped develop a strong wholesale lumber program. In 1976, she retired the lumber company and started her own lumber brokerage company. Most of her clients were in the southeast, however, in the late 70?s, through her contacts, Carol shipped a large amount of lumber to the Mideast, primarily Saudi Arabia. After her second retirement in 1990, Carol devoted most of her time sharing recipes friends, cooking, and collecting various items. Carol was a past President of the Fine Arts Club. Her husband, Ostell passed away July 20, 2010. They were married for 71 years. She is survived by her loving son, Sims T. (Tom) Ballew; a grandson, Scott; and a ?special granddaughter?, Megan, all of Columbia, SC. She was predeceased by sisters, Violet Riley and Mary Zingery; and brothers, Sims, Stanley and Kenneth Tompkins. Condolences may be mailed to Tom Ballew, 5917 Yorkshire Dr. Columbia, SC 29209.
