Obituary of Virgie Stevens

A funeral service celebrating the life and legacy of Virgie Inez Stevens, 86, of Columbia will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday morning, April 22, 2011 at First Baptist Church, Boyce Chapel with Reverend Dennis Banks officiating. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday evening at the funeral home. The family has entrusted Greenlawn Funeral Home with the arrangements Inez departed this earthly life on Tuesday, April 19, 2011. She was born in Kimberly, Alabama to Austin Russell and Vada Self Russell. Inez was a member of First Baptist Church where she was involved in the WMU, Oasis, Senior Adult Choir, R.S.V.P. Organization, and Meals on Wheels. She was also a member of the Hospitality Group at Christopher Towers where she resided for many years. Inez was predeceased by her parents, her husband, William James Stevens, Sr., two children, Juanita Arnold and Richard Stevens, Sr.; and a brother, Adriene Russell. Surviving are her loving children, Curtis (Shirley) Hagood of Alabama, Virginia (Gary) Hutton of Georgia, Betty Jarvis, William (Anita) Stevens, Jr., Mary (Tom) Hall all of South Carolina, and Carla (Read) Gignilliat of Georgia; a daughter-in-law, Gwen Stevens of South Carolina; her siblings, Carl Russell of South Dakota, Marva Ann Dowda of California, and Dorothy McCombs of Alabama; 16 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild, and a host of other loving relatives and friends that will miss her dearly.
