Janet Atkinson

Obituary of Janet B. Atkinson

Janet Leigh Atkinson aka Mama Janet or Granny

Janet was born to Janie Jennings and Wesley “Poppy” Brazell as we know them.  She had three brothers. Rod, who even though he thought she was annoying he protected her and loved her very much.  Later, Leonard & Timothy were born. Rod had taught her how to protect so well that she became their protector.

She graduated and set out to find herself moving to Atlanta and enjoying her youth.  Then she moved back home to live with her Granny where she met the love of her life in 1979. Bubba Atkinson had a motorcycle and she thought he was everything. After that they were married. Bubba had two children by a prior marriage, Jody and Leif. Momma Janet had two girls by the grace of God, Danyelle and Anna, she received 34 years ago.  She loved all four of us and we loved her.  For Janet, the love of her family was everything and she wanted us all around as much as we could be there.

Janet was very intelligent and accomplished, she worked in financial administration at the VA and the college for 25 years before retiring in her late 50’s.  But this was not her greatest achievements in life.  Those were her loved ones because you did not have to be blood for her to love you like blood.  She was one of the most compassionate women, honest, hardworking and loved Christmas. She told me one time that the magic of Christmas was like the wonder of a child and that was why she loved both of them so much.

She was survived by her husband, Bubba Atkinson; four children, Danyelle Atkinson and Tony, Jody Atkinson and Meredith, Leif Atkinson and Rebecca, Anna Cyphers Smith and Desy; her beautiful grands whom she adored, Shawn, Jenna, Devon, Shae, Cody, Wade, Cheyann, Knowlton, Braeden, Kaleb, Colt and Loriann Leigh. She also had 12 Great Grands she adored as well.

A graveside service will take place on Wednesday, March 15, 2023 at Celestial Memorial Gardens, Lexington SC, at 2PM. Pastor Josiah Hodge will be officiating the service.

Pallbearers will be Leonard, Rob, Jody, Tony, Desy, and Colt.
