What a wonderful Uncle I had. He was a kind big hearted guy. When I was a child he would take me roller skating & would play games with me at Grandma’s where he lived back then & I spent several summers. We had so much fun. I always wanted to hold his hand. Later in life my Mom & him would help each other. She would do his finances & he would do a few chores around her home. His sisters always looked out after him. After all his sisters past away he moved to NC. My husband & I helped him clear out his condo. And He did make time to stop by for dinner & to say his goodby’s before he left. It was a sad moment for us all. My daughter had come to love him as I did. He made her feel special to him like he had me. Over the following years we talked every few months & Holidays. I would send him gifts like a book of Ohio River barges I put together, a watch, movies, pictures, cookies & clothes. Yes Uk shirts too. He would be most grateful but He would say all u need to send is shaving cream….lol. When I would miss his call he would leave a message ….this is your favorite Uncle calling or where is my favorite neice. Our phone conversations were so interesting. We talked about the past, the present & his health. He talked more than most men I think. Had I known how sick he apparently was those calls would have been longer & more frequent. Other than the health issues we did discuss, he seemed in good spirits. I guess he didn’t want me to worry. What a shock his loss was to us. I have kept some of his phone messages that I will always treasure. Love u Uncle Gene….Shelley

As Nancy Williamson said, that wildcat had 100 lives! And as his therapist, I think I rehabbed him through most of them! I enjoyed our walks and talks. I will never look at a barge the same, knowing you can fry an egg on one of those when it gets hot enough. And my goodness did he love puzzles. His patience amazed me. He thought the world of his family and extended family. I will miss him so much. Praying for all of y’all

We will miss you Uncle Gene. I remember you coming over to mom and dads and telling me how you met my Aunt. You are no longer in pain and is with your family in heaven looking over us all.

Roy, or Eugene as we called him, was a great companion to mom and I am grateful for the time that they had together. They actually met when they were very young and were in Aunt Rosie (mom's sister) and Uncle Albert's (Eugene's brother) wedding. Eugene enjoyed our family gatherings, loved trying new foods, and I'll never forget seeing him diving off our diving board - I about had a heart attack as he could barely walk, but he could swim and enjoyed being in the water. He attended all of my kids events that he could and brought mom to every party and holiday meal that he could until the last few years he was just too sick to drive. Mikey liked it when Eugene and Mom would pick him up from school when he was "sick", he knew Eugene would always drive by Hardees for a medicinal hamburger. Eugene mourned with my family when my brother passed away and he became like a step dad to us. He always smiled when he saw us and was grateful for every gift we gave him. He had a love/hate relationship with his remote control and TV. Bob and the kids were constantly resetting his TV for him, while I plead ignorance (especially when it came to fixing his game boy). He will be greatly missed by our family, but I know he is finally pain fee and rejoicing with Uncle Albert and his brothers and sisters in Heaven ... and I'm sure they are all watching the Kentucky Wildcats play basketball.
