Obituary of Michael James Mays

Michael James Mays, 47, of Lexington, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, June 2, 2021 at his residence.

Born November 9, 1973 in Lancaster, SC, he was a son of Jim and Beth Mays. Michael loved watching movies, going to roller derby bouts and listening to live music, following James and Larry and other groups as they played at various venues. He held several positions in the food service industry, mostly as a cook. He loved preparing meals for his family and friends. Some of his specialties were Minestrone Soup, Chili, and German Red Cabbage. He especially enjoyed spending time with special friends, Rebecca and Chris, in Siesta Key, FL. Michael was known affectionately as “Crazy Mike” by his friends at Art Bar. He was very outgoing and several of his friends said he could light up a room with his personality. He was a lifelong member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church of Columbia.

Michael is survived by his parents, Jim and Beth Mays of Lexington, Clyde Byrdic, Jr (MJ) of Lexington; two sisters, Lisa Brasington (Kevin) of Leesville and Tiffany Mayo (Shelton) of NC; a brother, Ben Byrdic, III (Sara) of Lexington; and a number of aunts, uncles, cousins and many close friends.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00pm on Friday, June 18, 2021 at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Columbia. The family will receive friends following the service in the church’s reception room. Burial will be private.
