Obituary of Elinor Irene Schroeder

Elinor Irene “Chris” Schroeder, 95, died on July 13, 2018, in Anderson, South Carolina. A memorial graveside service will be held Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Columbia, South Carolina with Thompson Funeral Home at Greenlawn Memorial Park in charge. Visitation will be one hour earlier at the funeral home.

Chris was preceded in death by her parents, Grant and Irene Phillips; her sisters, Dorothy Thomason and Marlene McKean; and her brothers, Harold and Donald Phillips; a grandson, Peter F. Schroeder; and her husband of 52 years, Dr. Col. (USA Ret.) Gerald (Jerry) F. Schroeder, DVM.

Chris was a member of Forest Lake Presbyterian Church, Columbia, SC and attended Powdersville First Baptist Church, Easley, SC. She joined the Harlem Valley Chapter of the Eastern Star at age 18 and retained her membership for 77 years. Chris loved sewing, crafting and crossword puzzles. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed making character cakes for her family and friends. Chris was an avid bowler. She taught many children to bowl and served as Secretary and President of the Columbia Junior Bowling Association. She bowled in women’s and mixed leagues and enjoyed tournament bowling. In addition to serving as President of the Columbia Women’s Bowling Association, she was awarded a position in the South Carolina State Men’s Hall of Fame for her many years of volunteer service to the men’s association.

Chris is survived by her five children, Jerry (Nancy) Schroeder, Terry (Linda) Schroeder, Alan (Lauren) Schroeder, Neil (Nancy) Schroeder and Kathy (Larry) Maner; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
